About Us

Founded in 2000, our mission is to cultivate a Sustainable Nantucket island community by supporting local agriculture, food producers and makers. We do this by:

  • growing more food locally to address food insecurity

  • nurturing growers to improve access to nutritious food sources

  • providing education in our schools and community to encourage local, healthy eating and the love of growing

Sustainable Nantucket (SN) is a grassroots, local, non-profit organization that is building a more locally-based and self-reliant food system on-island through education, advocacy, training, and partnerships which include farmers, fishermen, local food producers, schools, restaurants, and other community stakeholders.

We raise awareness about local food, connect consumers to local food sources, advocate for greater local production, and work with our growers and food producers to develop creative methods to access resources and expand markets. While the benefits of local food access are numerous, advantages for the community include improving public health and nutrition, reclaiming the agricultural market as an economic driver on the island, and building food security and food sovereignty on-island.

Our programs include: Farm to School Program, the Farmers & Artisans Market, NantucketGrown Campaign, and the Mentor Farmer Program (MFP), a farmer training and education program based at Sustainable Nantucket, at Mount Vernon Farm - A Land Bank Property.
