Peter Brace

Peter Brace is the author of “Nantucket: A Natural History” and “Walking Nantucket: A Walker’s Guide to Exploring Nantucket on Foot.” A Nantucketer for 35 years and counting, Peter formerly covered the environmental beat for the Nantucket Beacon and the Nantucket Independent.

He is also owner and guide for Nantucket Walkabout, offering guided natural history hikes on island conservation land. Peter is an adjunct professor for UMass Boston’s School for the Environment, teaching the natural history of Nantucket during its “Nantucket Semester” through the UMass Boston Nantucket Field Station.

Peter is the chairman of the Coastal Resilience Advisory Committee, serves on the Harbor & Shellfish Advisory Board as secretary, and is on the Nantucket and Madaket Harbors Action Plan Update Committee as the secretary.

Peter is Sustainable Nantucket’s Farm Manager, operating as a liaison to the farmers, maintaining and fixing the farm, and running the mentor beekeeper program, with 33 hives under his care.

A seasonal kayaker and daily hiker, Peter knows Nantucket’s natural environs from shoreline to shoreline, and its multitudes of plant, mammal, fish, bird, insect, and reptile/amphibian species.
