The Five Food Groups
The Five Food Groups is the first unit of The Nantucket Nutrition Project created in partnership with Nantucket Public Schools through a generous grant from the Community Foundation for Nantucket. Through a variety of hands-on lessons, students learn about the five USDA designated food groups and what a balanced meal looks like. Integral to this garden-based unit is children’s in-depth knowledge of where their food comes from. A big piece of The Nutrition Project is a bilingual (Spanish/English) book entitled A Nantucket Plateful/Un Plato de Nantucket created by local talent which you can purchase here.
This unit covers the following nutritio standard from the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum Framework:
3.2 Use the USDA Food Guide Pyramid and its three major concepts of balance, variety, and moderation to plan healthy meals and snacks
