Introduction to Beekeeping

  • Sustainable Nantucket 168 Hummock Pond Road Nantucket, MA, 02554 United States (map)

Sustainable Nantucket’s beekeeper mentoring program begins its sixth year with a second Introduction to Beekeeping event on Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at Sustainable Nantucket Farm at 168 Hummock Pond Road. Come learn from Peter Brace, Sustainable Nantucket’s mentor beekeeper, about bees, beekeeping, equipment, the costs and the sweet rewards! We will visit our existing hives, check out the bee shed and extraction equipment, and tour the farm. Protective bee suits and gloves, bee colony cost and resources sheet will be provided. This talk is open to everyone interested in honey bees and beekeeping. Additionally, we are looking for no more than two year-round residents serious about becoming beekeepers starting in the spring of 2026. Those who decide to become beekeepers through Sustainable Nantucket’s beekeeping mentoring program will be guided by Peter through their first year of beekeeping at the farm. You will be required to keep at least one of your hives at Sustainable Nantucket’s farm and will have use of our honey extractor, exposure to experienced beekeepers at the farm and the ability to sell your honey at our farm stand. After the talk, those who want to can suit up in our bee suits and take a look inside an active beehive guided by Peter Brace. Please, no dogs at the farm.
